Green Movie Studio Planned In Lisbon

A first of its kind, this studio is being built with with sustainability in mind.

The first truly green film studio, possibly in the world, is being planned just outside of Lisbon. The €200 million ($215 million) project, called Tage Studios, is set to begin construction in late 2024 or early 2025 and will be the first backlot in Europe designed with environmental sustainability in mind.

The studio's facilities will be near-zero-energy structures, with rooftop photovoltaic panels providing electricity, rainwater recovery and reuse systems reducing water waste, and local biodiversity being preserved through careful landscaping. At least 85 percent of all site construction waste will be recycled, and much of the material used for construction will be locally sourced.

Tage Studios aims to be a benchmark eco-friendly and self-sustainable film and television facility from day one. The project is being led by David Hallyday, founder and director of Tage Studios. Tage Studios is among the first to attempt to go green from the start, unlike other major European studio facilities, which are trying to retrofit their facilities to be more eco-friendly. Portugal was chosen for practical and political reasons, with the country being among the world's most solar-friendly and having a government that is a global leader in environmental policy. The studio has been declared of national interest by the Portuguese government.

The project is being hailed as a major step forward for the film industry and the fight against climate change.
